Fetcham Scouts’ community vision

Hits: 57

From Anita Chamberlain, Group Leader 1st Fetcham Scouts

The original project to build a new Scout HQ has evolved into a project to develop a community building to be used, not only by the Scout Group, but by all members of the local community.

The new building (architects impression above)  will be called The Greenhouse and will offer facilities and activities for everyone including young people, families and older people, whilst also giving the Scouts a new home.

A partnership between 1st Fetcham Scout Group, St Mary’s Church, Mole Valley District Council and the Fetcham community has enabled us to secure the funding to move forward with this fabulous project. A not-for-profit Community Interest Company has been established and will oversee the running of the building.

I would like to thank all of our main donors and everyone in both the Scouting and local community, for their tireless work over the past three years by raising more than £800,000 to make our vision a reality.  And we are still fundraising.

Our aim now is to submit a full planning application in the near future with a view to, potentially, commencing the build phase in 2020 and having the building operational in 2021.

The plan is to locate the new building to the site of the current children’s playground. The children’s playground will be redesigned and new play areas and equipment provided by MVDC. The current Scout Hut will be demolished and that area will provide much needed additional car parking. The surrounding areas will be landscaped and the whole recreation area will be open for everyone to use.

A community café and terrace has been proposed, along with a hall space, catering standard kitchen, a variety of meeting rooms as well as a “changing places” disability toilet to enable and encourage all members of our community to come together and make Fetcham an even more supportive and thriving community.
